Velma G. Vogelpohl, 89, of Curtice, Ohio passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Mercy St. Charles Hospital in Oregon, Ohio, with her beloved husband of 67 years, Ralph at her side.  She was born on December 27, 1923 in Maumee, Ohio to Augustus and Lena (Gray) Niner of Maumee, OH.  Velma grew up in Maumee, where she graduated from Maumee High School. She attended business college and worked at Spicer (Dana) in Toledo, OH. In 1942, Ralph and Velma met in Curtice, OH and thus began their lifelong friendship and devotion to one another. After corresponding thru WWII, as Ralph served in the USMC, they married on July 26, 1945. They built their life together in Curtice, OH, where they lovingly raised their family; faithfully attended St. Ignatius Catholic Church and developed and maintained lasting friendships.

Velma’s life was one of giving of herself to family and friends, always using her talents to bless the lives of others, through gifts of food, baking or handcrafted items. Velma was passionate about supporting her husband, children and grandchildren in their activities whenever possible. Her special interests include baking, preparing large meals for family and friends, painting, needlework and crocheting. Velma was an avid card player, always ready for a challenge and ever ready to clear off the dining room table to have a game of cards. She was a member of a local card club for 50 years.


Velma is survived by her loving husband, Ralph; children:  John (Leslie Bondy) Vogelpohl, Marjorie (Larry) DeVerna; grandchildren:  Eric (Holly Minsel) Vogelpohl, Regina (Jon) Lassiter, Daniel (Jennifer Berry) DeVerna, Joseph DeVerna and Jason (Heidi Webb) DeVerna; 11 great-grandchildren and her brother, Harry Niner.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, William and Clarance Niner and sisters, Myrtle Frankforther and Grace Sisty.


Friends and family may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon, OH from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery.  Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Helping Hands of St. Louis.
