Selby “ST” Thames, 84, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2016. He was born on December 14, 1932 in, Chunky, Mississippi, to Selby and Velma (Boose) Thames Sr. ST served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked in construction for Midland Ross for 20 years until he retired. ST was an avid gardener, so much so, that he was a vendor at the Erie Street Market, known there as “Mr. Bean”. He also enjoyed football, basketball, fishing and hunting. ST was a fixture in the Birmingham neighborhood. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
ST is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Helen Thames; children, Yolondia (John) Poole, Victoria (Jakob) Gassner, Victor (Christine) Stewart, William (Mary) Stewart, Freda Brownlee, Selby Darryl Thames, Jeffory Thames, Robert (Tammy) Stewart, Brian Stewart and Calder Stewart; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; aunt, Jessie Backsdale; as well as many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie Sims’ brother, Edward Thames; son, Daniel Thames and grandson, Jeremy Morris.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. in Oregon on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. in Zion Hill Baptist Church, 2008 Valentine St. Toledo on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 with his family to greet guest one hour prior. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Selby’s family to assist with funeral expenses.
