Robert W. “Bob” Newell, age 81, of Millbury, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born in Toledo, Ohio to Homer and Kate (Knipple) Newell on June 28, 1930. Bob was a graduate of Macomber High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was with the Ohio State Highway Patrol from 1952-1959 and received the O. W. Merrill Award for service above and beyond the call of duty. Bob was active with the Oregon Recreation Dept. and was Chief Umpire for several years. He coached the Coy Oriole Pee Wee baseball team for eight years. He also served as Vice President of the Oregon Athletic Commission.
Bob worked as an insurance claims representative for 34 years, starting with Buckeye Union Insurance Company, then the Republic Franklin Insurance Company and retiring from Western Reserve/Lighting Rod Mutual Insurance Company in July, 1993. He was an active member of the Toledo Claims Association and the Toledo Claims Manager Assoc.
While living in Lakeland, Fl. From 1994 thru 2004, Bob was a member of the Eaglebrooke Golf and Country Club. He was proud to be the #2 Founding Member of Eaglebrooke. Bob umpired for several years with the Citrus Belt Umpires Assoc. where he umpired high school baseball and watched as some of these high school players became members of professional ball teams. He was a member of the Woodturners of Polk County, Florida and enjoyed woodturning with several friends he met there.
Bob was a member of St. Ignatius Church in Oregon, and was past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. In his leisure time, he enjoyed boating, fishing, woodworking, golf and traveling.
Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie (Obert) Newell. He married Janis F. (Belkofer) Wilson on 7-26-1978. He is survived by sons, Michael (Janet) Newell, Oregon, Ohio, Mark (Becky) Newell, Windsor, Colorado Steven (Debra) Newell, Ft. Myers, FL; daughters, Karen Brown, Northwood, Ohio, Diane (Toby) McDougle , Oregon, Ohio and Laurie (Bill) Holmes, Oregon, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Sunday, May 20th from 2-8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. in the funeral chapel on Monday. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Recreation department.
