Bob worked at Libbey-Owens-Ford Company for 36 years as a glass inspector, retiring in 1983. He was a life-long carpenter and worked for McCroskey Builders in his post-retirement years, building homes throughout Northwest Ohio.
Bob served as Scoutmaster for Troop 160 in the early 1970’s and counseled scouts on first aide and firemanship. He also served on the Millbury Volunteer Fire Department, a 35 year member from 1953 to 1988. He advanced to Lieutenant in 1956 and Captain in 1957. Bob served as Assistant Fire Chief from 1963 to 1977. He was named the Outstanding Fireman in 1972. He was promoted to Fire Chief in 1977 and served until 1988 when he retired. Millbury Mayor Michael Timmons proclaimed March 6, 1988 as Robert Vincent Day, in commemoration of his 35 years of service. Bob received letters of recognition from President Ronald Reagan, Governor Richard Celeste, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, State Representative Randall Gardner, State Representative Delbert Latta, U.S. Senator John Glenn and U.S. Senator Howard Metzenbaum. He was presented with a flag that was flown over the White House.
Bob was a member of Christ Dunberger American Legion Post #537 from 1983 to present time where he served as Past Commander. He formed the Christ Dunberger Color Guard and Rifle Squad in 1989, with fellow World War II veteran, Mr. Dan Anderson. They performed military funeral services throughout Lucas County and provided Memorial Day and Veterans Day services. Bob was named the American Legion Lucas County Council Legionnaire of the Year in 1997. The Color Guard and Rifle Squad was presented with the Community Improvement Award by Oregon Mayor Marge Brown at the 16th Annual Prism Awards in 2009.
Bob received the Kiwanis Club Humanitarian Award in 2002, along with his wife Alma Vincent, for their volunteer work with Christ Dunberger Post and various veterans’ hospitals. Oregon Mayor Marge Brown proclaimed June 1, 2009 as Robert Vincent Day, in honor of his many years of service to the Oregon community.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Bernice Vincent, brother, Paul Vincent and sister, Rose Vincent. He is survived by his loving wife, Alma Vincent; children, Carol Metzker, Daniel (Shar) Vincent, Joel (Cynthia) Vincent, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Vincent, Christine (David) Day and Constance Vincent; sister, Betty Ball; brother, Wayne Vincent; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. Oregon, Ohio on Monday, November 19, 2012 from 2-8 p.m. where a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m., Legion services at 7:15 p.m. and fireman service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Tuesday at 9 a.m. and continue on with the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ignatius Church Building Fund.
