Robert Sterling Shultz, age 92, was born on April 19, 1919 to Ford and Stella (Hart) Shultz. He passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012 at Bay Park Community Hospital, just missing his 93rd birthday. Robert grew up in Oregon, Ohio and was a 1937 graduate of Clay High School. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor and master’s degree in education. While in college he played basketball for the East Toledo Family House and baseball for the Old Dutch Beers. He played against Satchel Paige and got a hit to which Paige replied, “You’ll get no more.”

Robert’s first administrative job was in 1942 as the Principal and Athletic Director at Mt. Cory High School. Returning to Toledo, he was hired by Sylvania as a teacher and head basketball coach. He then came to Oregon and was a teacher at Coy Elementary as well as a football coach at Clay High School. Robert became Principal at Wynn Elementary, and went on to become the first principal of Starr Elementary in 1957 as well as Eisenhower Junior High in 1960. His last fifteen years in the Oregon school system, he served as Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs retiring in 1985. Robert was instrumental in working with the incorporation when Oregon became a city. He was an officer and member of several educational organizations throughout his career. Robert was inducted into the East Toledo Neighborhood House Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 1996, as well as the Clay High School Hall of Fame in 2006. Robert was appointed as the city of Oregon’s representative to the Lucas County Board of Health in 1982 and served until 2001. He was an avid golfer and played many courses across the United States.

Robert is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Marjorie Shultz; son, Robin (Christine) Shultz and daughter, Karen (Rob) Gray.

Funeral services will be private at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 South Wynn Road, Oregon, Ohio. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Robert’s name to Save-A-Pet or the Old Newsboy’s Goodfellows Association.
