Rev. Fr. Stephen Richard Majoros, age 82, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Little Sisters of the Poor- Sacred Heart Home in Oregon, OH. He was born on October 6, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio to Stephen and Barbara Majoros. He attended St. Stephen’s grade school in the Hungarian Birmingham area of Toledo. After graduating from the 8th grade he made his decision to go into the Priesthood. He attended Sacred Heart Minor Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind., Central Catholic High School in Toledo, St. Lawrence College in Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin and Mt. St. Mary’s of the West Seminary in Cincinnati, OH.

Father was ordained a priest on May 25, 1957 by the Most Rev. George J. Rehring, then Bishop of Toledo, in Rosary Cathedral. Father’s first assignment was to Findlay-St. Michael’s Parish where he served as associate pastor and taught Latin and religion to 9th graders and managed the Parish school bus fleet. This appointment was from June 1957 to October 1967; from there he was transferred to Toledo St. Catherine’s Parish until August of 1969; then his next assignment was Toledo St. Jude as well as an instructor for two years at Holy Spirit Seminary (1969-71) until June 1970 when he received his first appointment as Pastor. That was for the parishes of Fayette Our Lady of Mercy and Lyons Our Lady of Fatima. In 1970, the Bishop appointed Father as one of the co-founders of the Lay Employees Pension Plan & Trustee. He served for 16 years (1970-86). He also served 13 years as the first priest representative to the priests’ pension plan (1970-83). His next assignment was pastor to Huron St. Peter’s Parish. In December of 1974, Father was appointed Dean of the Sandusky Deanery. In June of 1980, Father was appointed Director of the Mission Office (Office of Global Concerns) and Chaplain to the Ursuline Motherhouse. In July of 1987, Father was appointed chaplain of St. Francis Rehabilitation Hospital & Nursing Home in Green Springs, Ohio. In July of 1989 Father was appointed to Toledo St. Anthony & St. Stanislaus Parishes until February 1994 when Father was appointed as pastor to Toledo St. Joseph Parish, where he served faithfully until his retirement in July 2008. After that, Father’s life got busier by hearing confessions and helping with Masses regularly at St. Joseph and Saints Adalbert and Hedwig in Toledo, Ohio. Father Majoros is survived by his older sister Vivian Bartko and his nephew Edward (Jerri) Bartko, Jr., and their children Jennifer and Cory.

Visitation will be from 4-8 Monday, May 12, 2014 at Toledo St. Joseph Church on Locust Street with Vespers for the Dead at 6:00 pm. The Tridentine Requiem High Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Rosary Cathedral on Collingwood Blvd. in Toledo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, who took such wonderful care of Father in his last days. Father Majoros will be greatly missed by countless people, who benefited from his sermons, his wisdom in the confessional, and his firm loyalty and defense of the Catholic Faith.
