NANCY E. (HAENGGI)  WICKS

1948-2023

Nancy E Wicks, much-loved wife of Royce, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning October 3, 2023. Nancy’s eyes brought gaiety to every dinner table, her hearty, unbridled laugh could affect the stodgiest hearer, and in her voice, you heard the trust of a better tomorrow.  Her spirit was grand, though she was never one to impose on others. But when she knew the right step forward, she firmly spoke her position.  And when justice was driving her message, she affirmed its merit.  Here Royce himself benefited from her clear instruction on women’s rights and family needs.  Moreover, she was rich in kindness, especially to the lonely.

Nancy worked at both Mercy and St. Charles Hospitals as a medical technologist all her working years, retiring in 2013. She was active with Sacred Heart Church as a eucharistic minister and on the parish renovation committee. She was a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council in the first years of its formation during the 1970s.  Following the birth of her twins in 1973 she joined the Toledo Mothers of Twins and served as membership chair and chaplain. She was named Mother of the Year in 1984.

Nancy is survived by Royce, her husband of 51 years, her children Andrew (Erin), Christy (Manny), Peter (Stacy), and Jon (Deanna).  She leaves three energetic, delightful grandchildren, Fitz, Ford, and Olive. She is also survived by her brother, John (Alice) Haenggi, and her sister, Shirley Haenggi.  She also leaves many nieces and nephews who remember her reliable cards, gifts, and social media posts in their every significant life event. Her friends are legion among St. Agnes Alumni, St. Ursula Alumni, Toledo Council of Catholic Young Adults, Sacred Heart Church, St. Martin de Porres Church, Toledo Mothers of Twins, and Glass City Mothers of Multiples.  She will be greatly, greatly missed.

Family will receive friends at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S Wynn Rd, Oregon Friday, from 4-7 pm. Sr. Virginia Welsh will lead vigil prayers at 6:30 p.m. The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Martin de Porres Church, 1119 Bancroft St. Toledo Saturday, October 7, at 11:00 am, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to service. For those unable to attend, the service will be live-streamed on YouTube @ SMDP Toledo. In lieu of flowers, tributes to Nancy’s life should be made to Cardinal Stritch, St. Ursula Academy, St. Jude Children's Hospital, or St. Louis Helping Hands.
