Lois W. (Hopkins) Karamol

Lois 91 a long time resident of Oregon, Ohio passed away April 20, 2013, at Park Cliffe Alzheimer’s Extended Care campus.  She was born in Toledo, Ohio, on May 8, 1921, to Arnold and Martha Dusing.  The first of three children she had a brother Norman, and a sister Velma (Haynes).  She attended Bowling Green and University of Toledo where she received her teaching degree.  Lois taught in many school districts including Alpena, MI., the Sioux Indian reservation in SD., Denver, CO. public schools, Marshall School in Toledo, and finally retiring from teaching in Jerusalem with Oregon Schools.  She all ways talked about her sixth graders and how proud she was of them.

She married Gilbert Hopkins in 1946 and had two children. Michael and Stephen. Gilbert passed away in 1971 and she later re-married Joseph Karamol.

In her retirement she traveled throughout the United States along with travel to England, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. All of her travels through her life were recorded in journals. Some of her entries included falling in front of a double-decker bus in England, getting held-up at the Vatican, and when traveling from Poland to Germany; being on the train car with smugglers who attempted to bring cigarettes back into Germany. She tells about the secret police arresting the smugglers and dogs sniffing out the cigarettes in the ceiling.  The lights and ceiling tile were torn from the train; and the police removed more than a thousand cartons then stacking along the train tracks.   All the time the police worked around them and said nothing. Finally the train started back on its way leaving Joe and Lois in a gutted train car.   She especially loved visiting Alaska where she and Joe camped from their truck camper staying up to 5 months at a time and visiting the state on 6 different occasions. Lois and Joe enjoyed fishing for perch on Lake Erie.  She also became an early member and very active in the Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society.  She wanted to preserve the past to keep history for future generations.

Her parents, husbands Gilbert and Joseph, her brother Norman, brother in-law Larry Haynes and her son Stephen, along with her grandson Joseph preceded Lois in death.  She is survived by her sister Velma, (Larry Haynes), and her son’ Michael (Susan), and three grandchildren, Stephen, Scott, and Brian.  Friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 10-1 p.m. where services will follow at 1 p.m.  Interment will be held at Lake Township Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers it is suggested that a memorial be given to the Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society, PO.167632, Oregon, Ohio 43616.
