Leonard J. Wasserman, 87, of Oregon, Ohio passed away at home on Monday, March 10, 2014.  He was born on March 23, 1926 to William and Marie Wasserman.  Leonard was a 1944 graduate of Olney High School and served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, during WWII.  He enjoyed farming all his life, until retiring in 2000.  Len worked as an engineer for Pure-Union Oil in Oregon for 22 years then as chief engineer for Little Sisters of the Poor for 24 years until his retirement.  He served in various capacities for the City of Oregon including: councilman in Oregon from 1965 to 1975, Mayor from 1975 until 1981, member of T.M.O.C.O.G. and past chairman of the Land & Transportation Committee, member of Civil Service Commission, chairman of Safety Commission and the Oregon Growth Commission.  He was also involved with the Oregon Democratic Club where he served as past president and was a life time member 45+ years, precinct committeeman.  In recognition of his service to the community of Oregon, he was honored by the city with two proclamation days and a section of the bike path behind the family home bearing his name.

He was a life member of St Ignatius Church, member and past president of the Holy Name Society, church lector, Eucharistic minister, member and past president of St Vincent DePaul Society, church councilman, usher and as  the past president of the church credit union.

Len was a member of the Christ Dunberger American Legion Post 537, where he served as chaplain and member of the color guard, V.F.W. 9816, life member of O.C.A.W. 346, Old News Boys, Eagles 2562, Swiss Club, G.A.F. Society and the G.B.U.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wilma and children Mary J. Wasserman, Joe (Connie) Wasserman, Gerry (Anne) Wasserman, Theresa (Joe Jr.) Romano, Susan J. Kline, Rosanne (Tom) Beaverson, Patricia (John) Zimmerman and Ann (Matt) Pumphrey; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Rita Boes, Dorothy Dippman, Elsie Dippman, Leo Wasserman, Viola Gahler, Angela Dunn, Jane Cajak, Anna Mae Sattler and Verna Konesky.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernadine; brother, Donald Wasserman and sister, Luella Fairchild.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon from 2-9 p.m. on Thursday where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and veteran’s services will be held at 7 p.m.  Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Friday at 9:15 a.m. and continue on with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ignatius Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.  Memorial contributions can be made to Little Sisters of the Poor or St. Ignatius Church.
