Larry Lee Schmitz

Larry Lee “Smitty” Schmitz, age 74, of Curtice, OH, passed away at home Saturday, July 13, 2024 with his family by his side. He was born in Toledo, OH on November 15, 1949 to Paul John Schmitz and Audrey Agnes Phitzer, he was raised by Paul and his second wife, Grace. Larry enlisted in the US Air Force and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. For his service to country, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After returning home, he married the love of his life Joyce, and together they raised their family. Larry worked many jobs throughout his life, including working at Anchor Point Marina and Jeep in his younger years; he was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating and was always helping others. Always a kind and generous person, during the winter months he could be found plowing his neighbors’ driveways.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Joyce Schmitz; children, Larry Schmitz, Terry Schmitz, Tonya (Hjalmer) Roe, Tamara (Brad) Lipp, Alicia (Carl) Long, William (Taylor) Phillips, and Deborah Phillips; his 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and his siblings, Paul (Sandra) Schmitz, Judith Floyd, and Michael (Chrissy) Schmitz. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Karen King, and Wayne Schmitz; and his brother-in-law, James Floyd.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel , 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral chapel on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Larry will be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery with military funeral honors. Memorial contributions in his name may be made the Ann Arbor Fisher House, Disabled American Veterans, or to Southern Care Hospice.
