Julie I. Smith, age 66, passed away at home surrounded by family on December 26, 2024. Julie was born to Thomas and Irene (Connie Horvath) Smith on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1958 in Oregon, Ohio.
Julie retired in 2021 after working in the eye care business for over 20 years. Earlier in her career, she spent many years in the banking business, most of those years with 5/3 Bank. She was a long-time member of St. Ignatius Church. In her free time, and in retirement, she enjoyed golfing, scrapbooking, watching the Buckeyes, and spending time with family.
In her younger years, she was an excellent tennis player, earning her varsity letter on the Clay High School men’s tennis team. She was a gifted softball player and she, along with her sister Dee, competed in the Toledo Women’s Softball League and many tournaments. She was an avid and very talented golfer. She would often out-drive her competition – female OR male (much to their dismay) and spent many years on the links with her mom and dad.
She had quite an extensive Raggedy Ann and Andy collection and had many Volkswagen Beetle collectibles. You may have even seen her beautiful green “bug” around town. She loved dachshunds – having two of them growing up but loved any and all that she came in contact with. Most of all she loved her family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them, especially her three nieces and two grandnephews. Family was so important to her. We think all would agree that if you knew Julie for your whole life, for many years, or you just met her, she was one of the most kind, friendly, polite, and sweet people that you ever knew.
Julie is survived by her sisters Deanna (Tom) Donahue and Dawn (Todd) Schiavone; nieces Olivia (Ryan) Laberdee, Lindsay (Kyle) Row, and Hayley Schiavone; and grandnephews Grady and Ryder Laberdee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas E. Smith and Irene (Connie Horvath) Smith.
The family will receive friends at the Freck Funeral Home, 1155 S. Wynn Rd., Oregon, Ohio on Saturday, January 4th, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. A luncheon will be held afterwards. Details for the luncheon will be displayed during the visitation. Memorial contributions in Julie’s name can be directed to the Toledo Humane Society or St. Ignatius Catholic Church (Oregon, Ohio).
The family would like to extend their gratitude to all of the wonderful healthcare professionals that took such great care of Julie over the years.
