John V Powers

John Virgil Powers, age 86, of Walbridge, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Genoa Care Center. He was born September 3, 1925 to John and Mary (Gerlach) Powers in Toledo, Ohio. John was a self employed carpenter and was one of the founding members of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church where he was the custodian for many years.  He was involved in many church activities including bingo and working the church festival.  In his free time he enjoyed playing pinochle and all types of puzzles.  John was a Honorary Life Member of St. Jerome  Knights of Columbus Council 11450.

John is survived by his children:  Kathleen (Nick) Wright, Michael (Donna) Powers, Timothy (Gail) Powers, Maureen (Dave) Slovak, Christopher (Teresa) Powers, Jerome (Karen) Powers and Joseph (Donna) Powers.  John was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and is also survived by his sister, Rosemary Nietz and brother, Tom Powers.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; son, Daniel Powers and brothers, Richard, Eugene and Bernard.

Friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. in Oregon (419) 693-9304, on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. where a scripture service will be at 7 p.m.  The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Jerome Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. where friends will be greeted one hour prior to service.   Burial will follow in Lake Township Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of N.W. Ohio or Genoa Care Center.
