John Matthew Nowak

October 23, 1930 — October 27, 2014

John Matthew “Jan” Nowak, 84, of Curtice, OH., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 27, 2014, while holding hands with his loving wife of 63 years, Evelyn (Iwinski) Nowak, his Woodward High School sweetheart.  His family including all 8 children were there to care for him during his last days. He was born on October 23, 1930 in Toledo, OH to Frank and Agatha (Czupich) Nowak. While he was alive, they enjoyed his stories, interest in fishing, Sunday drives to Metzger's Marsh, Tiger's baseball and his outgoing personality. He loved reading the newspaper, eating a good Polish meal and talking with friends. A retired Libbey Owens Ford millwright, (Rossford, 1949-1992), John belonged to United Glass Workers Local #9. He was for many years a cub master for Cub Pack 1, the local parish president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, member of the Polish National Alliance and St. Adalbert Holy Name Society. He was a long time volunteer at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Bono) church festival. Among the many things he was involved in he always put his family first.

John is survived by his loving wife; children, Michael (Kendra), Thomas (Linda), Marlene Layton (Larry), Sharon Dumit (Tom), Martin (Tina), Amy Swierczek (Eric), Pamela Burson (Rick), and Jeffrey Nowak, PhD; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and he loved each and every one of them. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Emma. Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Frank, Bill (Violet), Joe (Donna), and Mac (Delores); sister Wanda (Roland) VanFleet and grandson Thomas James Nowak Jr.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Friday, October 31, 2014 from 2 - 8 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m. John’s Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Bono, OH. The family will greet guests one hour prior to the Mass at church. Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Bono, OH or Toledo, OH St. Vincent de Paul Society.
