John Russell Montgomery

John Russell Montgomery, age 83, of Oregon, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 4, 2024.  He was born on February 25, 1940 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Russell Kenneth and Lillias McPherson (Laing) Montgomery.  John earned his bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Melon and his master’s degree in Quantum Mechanics from the University of Toledo.  He worked various places over the years, including Strong Electric, Jobst Institute, and Owens Community College.  John had been working as a professor at Owens for the last 30 years, working up until his passing.  He was a man of faith and a devoted Christian, attending Westgate Chapel for many years.

Whether working on nuclear rockets, firing cannons, drawing portraits, or woodworking, John always loved making those around him feel special. His way of showing it included writing notes to people in beautiful calligraphy, making sure you were offered tea and cookies, and giving of himself to make sure anyone he got to know felt loved and secured.

John is survived by his children:  Faith Elizabeth Montgomery, Russell Kenneth (Melissa) Montgomery II, and Lillie Anna (Keith) Montgomery Morgan MD.; grandchildren:  Rana Daye Furtney, Tasha Rose Furtney, Amos Furtney, Christa Joy Furtney, Maria Furtney, Jackson Russell Montgomery, Lucy Elizabeth Montgomery, Margaret Nasia Montgomery, Rebecca Rylee Montgomery, Nathan Charles Montgomery, Avery Lynn Morgan, and Alex Sophia Morgan.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Deborah; and his brother, Rev. Robert Laing Montgomery.

Friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel at 1155 S. Wynn Rd.  (419) 693-9304, on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m.  Burial will take place at Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA.
