John William Contos, Jr.

John William Contos, Jr. age 80, of Toledo, OH, passed away at Genoa Care Center peacefully Saturday, January 28, 2023 in his sleep after a seven-month illness. He was born in Toledo, OH to John Sr. and Harriett (Bundy) Contos on February 23, 1942. John worked for many years as a mechanical engineer for LOF and later for Toledo Edison. He retired in 2007 as a USDA grain inspector. John was a lifelong member of Calvin United Church of Christ, serving on the Consistory for many years, and he enjoyed playing dartball and making kolbasz. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, classic cars, crossword puzzles, and his favorite sports team, the Cleveland Indians. John’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.

John leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Verona; his children, John A. Contos, Sr., and Wendy McDougle; his grandchildren, John A Contos, Jr., Mariah McDougle, and Samantha McDougle; his sister-in-law, Nancy (Brad) Sheets; his niece and nephews, Kyle Sheets, Ryan Sheets, and Amanda Sheets; and his beloved cat, Charlie. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. John will be laid to rest at Lake Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Calvin United Church of Christ. The family wishes to thank the staff at Genoa Care Center for their kind and compassionate care for John.
