Hoyt M. Ensign, 92, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2015 at the Goerlich Center in Sylvania, Ohio.
He had a passion for life and showed great love and support for his family.
He was born November 16, 1922 in Coldwater, Ohio, to Forest and Ada (McNair) Ensign. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1940 and later served in the US Air Force. He was a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in dentistry and was a dentist then orthodontist in the Toledo area for over 50 years.
He married Penelope Jane Purse and in their marriage of 25 years together they raised 6 children. As a family they took many trips across the country and had a special passion for Florida where they lived on and off. He was a member of the Toledo area Mens Barbershop, the Toledo Dental Society, and participated in many leisure activities including equestrian horse shows, sailing, photography, and travel.
He married Elizabeth (Betty) Smith, who was the love of his life and dance partner, and together they enjoyed 25 years of marriage. Together they participated in numerous clubs including The Polish American Band, Toledo Ski Club and choir members of Trilby United Methodist Church where they belonged. They could always be seen getting up and dancing to the jitterbug wherever they went.
Hoyt was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, his first wife Penelope Purse, his second wife, Elizabeth Smith Ensign and his daughter Christine. He is survived by his children, Eric Ensign (Maria), Marc Ensign (Marti), Sarah Zervos (Randie), Wendy Trom (Kevin), Andrew Ensign, step children Sarah Smith (Kathy), Juli Wemmer (Diane), Taeko Shima, and Sheyla Lira (Vitor), his grandchildren, Kristin, Mackenzie, Mason, Ashley, Jackson, Joseph, Sophie, Casey, and numerous great-grandchildren. He was our best supporter in life and he will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at Trilby United Methodist Church, 5918 Secor Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. Contributions may be made directly to the church. Arrangements were entrusted to Freck Funeral Chapel.
