Gregory John (Shamu) Koester

Gregory John Koester, “Shamu”, age 69 of Oregon passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Mercy St. Charles Hospital. Greg was born to Ernest and Fern (Peppers) Koester on March 30, 1952, in Toledo, Ohio. He was a 1970 graduate of Clay High School where he excelled as an athlete. Greg loved to play all sports his favorite being bowling, softball, and ping pong, and in his later years golf. He also coached everything from soccer to hockey. Greg loved shooting and wanted everyone to go with him. He competed in fast draw competitions and also enjoyed archery.

Greg retired as an electrician from Jeep in 2005 after 35 years of service. It was at Jeep he was given the nickname “Shamu”. He was an instructor at Owens Community College. Greg played guitar and sang. He shared his talents at First St. Mark Lutheran Church where he was a member.

Greg was an outspoken patriot who loved his country. He always had something to say. He loved deeply, especially his grandchildren.

Greg is survived by his wife of 31 years Lacynthia Koester, children Joshua Koester, Monica (Rick) Steele, and Tina (Robert) Toth; grandchildren Ashton, Tristan, Hayden, Julian, and Elizabeth; siblings Ronald (Ann) Koester and Carol Thomas; and nephews Eric, Kevin, and Jason. He was preceded in death by his parents and niece Lorri.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, from 2-6:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel.
