George J. Gyurko, 76, of Oregon, OH passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Parkcliffe of Northwood. He was born in Toledo on October 30, 1940 to George and Elizabeth (Toth) Gyurko. George served our country in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed boxing in his youth, later becoming a Golden Gloves Boxer in the Navy. George was a firefighter for the Toledo Fire Department at Station 13 for 25 years, retiring in 1988.  He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. In his spare time, George enjoyed fishing, bowling and playing poker. He was a talented artist, working in many different mediums most notably for his dollar bill origami. George enjoyed his time with the “guys” for coffee and visits from Mickey Felaris.

He is survived by his children, Shelley (Darl Czerniejewski) Rogers and George M. (Laurie) Gyurko; grandchildren, Danielle (Raul Rendon) Rogers, Kyle (Robbie) Rogers, Tyler Czerniejewski, McKinley Gyurko and Abbey Gyurko; great-grandchildren, Braelynn, Brynlee Braxten and Coltin Rogers, Camilla Rendon; brother, Jeff (Jerry) Gyurko; sister, Kristina (Rudy) Schwarzkopf and many niece, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlene “Laberdee”.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd., Oregon, on Sunday, January 8, 2016 from 2-8 p.m. with a last alarm service at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held on Monday in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to T.F.R.D. Foundation.
