Dennis Roger Karl

October 27, 1936 — January 28, 2022

Curtice, Ohio

Dennis (Denny) Karl, of Curtice, passed away peacefully at his home the morning of January 28, 2022.  Denny was the second of three children born to Lee and Alberta (Snyder) Karl born in Toledo, OH on October 27, 1936.

His early childhood was filled with adventure (and misadventures) in his East Toledo neighborhood.  He attended Good Shepherd School, and spent summers at his cousin’s farm in Montpelier, Ohio.  It was during this time that Denny became familiar with both hard work and his Lord, Jesus Christ.

Denny went on to attend Clay High School, where he excelled in several sports, especially football; and was honored to be inducted into the Clay Athletic Hall of Fame.

Upon graduation, Denny enlisted with the U.S. Air Force.  He was trained as a communication tower repairman and travelled to both Japan and Iceland during his time of service.  After the Air Force, Denny was hired as a lineman for the Toledo Edison and retired after 34 years of service.

During Denny’s early 20’s, he was introduced to the love of his life, Joanne Michalak, at a weekly TCCY dance.  She was an answer to his prayers in many ways.  They were married Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1961.  Denny and Joanne were wed for 60 years and had 6 children, 26 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.

Early in their marriage, Denny and Joanne bought the Williston Quarry and they ran it for over 15 years.  It was his pride and joy to work and maintain the property and to share it with family and friends.

Denny was a strong Catholic Christian man who inspired those around him through word and deed.  He was a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Bono, volunteering whenever and however he could.  Denny was an integral part of the Ministry of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for several decades.  He was extremely passionate about the sanctity of life and was active in the Pro-Life movement.  Denny was also a ministry team member for Cursillo retreats and men’s prison ministry for the last several decades as well.

Those who knew Denny Karl had the pleasure of hearing his entertaining stories, the twinkle in his eyes and mischievous nature.  He loved watching sports, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s events.  He also enjoyed visiting with family wherever they were, whether it was Europe, Africa, or various places around the United States.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jacky Sullivan.  He is survived by his wife, Joanne Karl; children, Rose (Jim) Montalvo, Joellen (Jim) Howard, Maria (Chris) St. John, Maureen (Matt) Cech, Dennis (Martha) Karl, David (Erin) Karl; and brother, Tom (Jerre) Karl.

Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Bono, OH, on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation two hours prior in the church narthex. Denny will be laid to rest at Allen Township Cemetery, Williston, OH at a later time. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Bono, OH.
