Darlene Joy Garand, 73, of Oregon, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Mercy St. Vincent’s Hospital. She was born on November 27, 1938 in Warren, Ohio to Russell and Winifred Edwards. Darlene was a 1956 graduate of Clay High School and went on to become a special education teacher for many years in the Toledo, Oregon and Genoa school systems.
She was a former member of Christ United Methodist Church and a parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church where she married her husband, Richard in 1960. Together they raised 3 children and 2 foster children. Darlene was a founding member of the Oregon Community Theatre and sang with the Choraliers for many years. Darlene started Custom Tours and Travel and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren. She loved to travel and play cards in her spare time.
Darlene is survived by her loving husband of 51 ½ years, Richard; children: Rick Garand, Joy (Steve) Nichols and Fred (Sarah) Garand; grandchildren: Rikki Garand, Michael, Matthew and Joseph Nichols, and Anthony, Chelsea, Ashlynn, and Collin Garand; 4 great-grandchildren; foster daughters, Dorothy Caylor-Griffiths and Judy (Doug) Henry and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Russell Edwards.
Family and friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. and Monday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will begin on Tuesday in the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. and continue on with the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ignatius Church or the Oregon Community Theatre.
