At the age of 12 years old Dale began hunting, fishing and trapping in order to supply his family with fresh game to eat and pelts to sell. He was an expert marksman. At the age of 90, he shot 2 ducks with one shot. He always enjoyed his game hunting throughout his life. Dale enlisted in the National Guard and spent 4 years in the United States Army, during World War II. He was deployed to the Solomon Islands and was engaged in hand-to hand combat before contracting malaria and being shipped home in 1944. He received the Bronze Star, as well as other medals for his brave and valiant efforts to protect his fellow soldiers and the country he loved. Dale was able to live the last 27 years of his life in retirement in the St. Petersburg, Florida Area where he was active in the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ervin, Arnold, Woodrow and Wesley Schimming; sisters, Janet Witson and Lucille Frederick. Dale is survived by his two daughters who he loved and supported, Jennifer (Bill) White and Gail (Tim) Gerwin. He is also survived by his three grandsons Ryan and Eric Gerwin and Bradley White and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Schimming and Evelyn Schimming as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. Oregon, Ohio on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Allen Twp. Cemetery in Williston. Memorials can be made in Dale’s name to St. Mark Lutheran Church Toledo, Ohio or Hospice of Northwest Ohio or any of the donor’s choice.
