CHARLES J. MCGARRY
Charles J. McGarry, 99, of Oregon, Ohio passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 14, 2015 while surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Toledo on October 7, 1915 to George and Mabel (Etue) McGarry. Charles went to Good Shepherd Catholic grade school and Central Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1934. He worked for Cogan’s grocery store and the A&P. Then in 1941, he began working at Ohio Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1978 as an engineer. Charles was a life member of the Telecom Pioneers.
Charles met and married Norma Belle Gregg in April of 1940 and they remained happily married until her death in 1978. He was very active in his church as an usher, Communion distributor, church credit union officer, greeter and member of St. Vincent DePaul. He had his own TV repair service that he ran out of his home for about 5 years. He loved to travel and work in his garden. His generosity, sense of humor and kindness will be missed by all those who knew him.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Susan Momenee and Kathleen (Bill) VanCamp; grandchildren, Kam (Tony) Smoktonowicz, Christine (Brian) Emch and Charles (Mary) Momenee; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Jackie Smoktonowicz and Katie and Nick Emch. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma McGarry; brothers, John and Edmund McGarry and son-in-law, Thomas Momenee.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd, Oregon, on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 from 2-9 p.m. where a scripture service will be held at 6 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. and continue on with the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made in Charles’ name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Ignatius Building Fund or Disabled American Veterans.
