Bertha Ann (Compton) Johnson passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born on September 11, 1928, to Gladys (Myers) and Charles Compton in Norwalk, OH. She was a graduate of Devilbis High School and attended the former Mary Manse College, where she was the sophomore Class President. Growing up, Bertha was an accomplished dancer and was invited to audition with the Rockettes. She married Bruce Robert Johnson on November 27, 1948. Together they raised five children in Oregon, OH. Bertha had an affinity for the medical field, working at various physician offices, throughout the years. While raising her kids she was known for her involvement in her children's activities. This included serving as President of Coy Mother's Club and her faithful attendance at their sporting events and various activities. She loved gardening and was an avid reader of mystery novels. Her family will remember her for her wit, unique phrases, and selflessness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter and husband of 28 years, Bruce, whom she fondly referred to as "Mr. Johnson," when telling a story of him. She is survived by her children Charles (Linda), Dale (Elizabeth Drake), Susan, Janice (Thomas) O'Brien, and Bruce (Julie). In addition, Bertha is survived by grandchildren Matthew, Amanda, Andrew, Thomas, Sean, Brian, Elizabeth, Taylor, and Caleb Johnson; and Kevin and Patrick O'Brien.
Visitation will be at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd., Oregon, OH on Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
