Berardino “Benny” Lazzaro, 91, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 8, 2011. He was born on December 3, 1919 in Fossa (L’Aquila) Italy to Cecedio and Antonini Lazzaro. He emigrated to the United States on November 11, 1937, and became a U.S. citizen in 1942. On August 8, 1942, he married his wife of 66 years, Josephine “Jo” Lazzaro, at Michael’s Church. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Benny was very proud of his family and Italian heritage. Benny retired from Libbey Owens Ford after 29 years of employment, and he was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Benny was an avid cook, winemaker and gardener. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Benny is survived by his children, James (Betty) Lazzaro of Perrysburg and Ann Marie Lazzaro of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Alicia Lazzaro of Newport Beach, CA and Anthony (Erica) Lazzaro of Cleveland Heights, OH; great-grandchildren Samuel and Sofia, children of Anthony (Erica); brother, Angelo Lazzaro of Brisbane, Australia and many family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Josephine.
Friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. in Oregon (419) 693-9304, on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 2-8 p.m. where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at 10 a.m. where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
