Alice Jean Thomas

September 6, 1936 — April 23, 2021

Alice Jean Thomas passed away on April 23, 2021 after a long fight with Alzheimer's and breast cancer. She was 84.

Born on September 6, 1936, in Jerusalem Township, Ohio, to her German and Scandinavian parents, she was one of eight children and was an active tomboy raised on her family farm. One of her favorite childhood memories was helping collect milkweed pods which were used to make life jackets for the U.S. Navy during World War II.

As an adult, she was a working girl as a telephone operator at Ohio Bell where she met the love of her life when her coworker set her up on a blind date with her brother. Bill still says the most memorable thing about meeting Alice was her beautiful smile. And he spent the next 62 years trying to make her smile every day.

Until her health condition made it impossible, Alice lived a full life as a beloved wife, mother, friend, and neighbor. She was a farm girl at heart who loved to grow her vegetables and flowers, and she was highly skilled with her Singer sewing machine. She could out drive her husband on the golf course, was a competitive euchre player, and could catch her limit of walleyes and perch on Lake Erie. But hands down, one of her best God-given gifts was cooking and baking – be it her pumpkin chiffon pie to her chicken paprikash to her Hungarian cookies.

Most of all she loved her family especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Alice is survived by her husband Bill; daughters Cathy Wagner, Chris Dykstra, and Pattie Stechschulte; grandchildren, Dayna, Will, Shane, Cameron, and Jack; great-grandchild Will; sisters Shirley, Nancy, Maggie; and brother Dick.

Private services and burial will be held for the family.  Memorial contributions can be made to ProMedica Hospice, 430 S. Main St. Clyde, OH 43410.
