Albert G. Huntermark, Jr.
Albert G. Huntermark, Jr., age 80, of Toledo, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2013. He was born on December 29, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio to Albert G. Huntermark, Sr. and Mary Ambrose. He attended Central Catholic High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #4906. After the war, Al began a career at Libbey Owens Ford. He retired from the L.O.F. plant in Rossford after 38 years, mostly working in the Tank Dept.
Al met his wife, Madeline Donofrio, who preceded him in death, at a CYO dance. They shared a love of dancing and cooking during their 58 years together. Together with his wife, Al raised six children. Al was known as the “mayor” of east Toledo by his family and friends, as he seemed to know or have a connection with everyone. He was also an avid sports enthusiast who could rattle off statistics and tidbits about any game. A lifelong Cleveland Indians and Browns fan, Al spent many summers at the Indians field with his uncles. Al played softball almost his entire life, playing on teams for L.O.F., St. Thomas Aquinas and the East Toledo Senior Center. He pitched his last game at age 71.
Al coached C.Y.O. basketball for over 50 years, coaching many of his children and grandchildren. He received the Monsignor Jerome Schmit Award and the Mary Kurucz Veteran Coaches award for his many dedicated years as a C.Y.O. coach impacting hundreds of kids. Al attended almost every sporting and school event his grandchildren were involved in until his health did not permit him to get around easily.
He was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church serving as an Usher, RCIA Sponsor, Festival Chairman and involved in many other activities. He delivered food to shut-ins for Good Shepherd Church and ushered at the Rosary Cathedral for special events. After he retired, he spent several years as a “Lunchroom Grandpa” at St. Thomas and St. Jerome Schools. He always joked he had to quit his job at St. Jerome because his grandchildren would borrow money from him daily to buy cookies and he could not afford to work there any longer.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, especially his breakfast club friends from L.O.F.
Al is survived by his children, Al (Tina), Kim, Greg, Jim (Diane), Tom (DarLynn) and Patrick (Darlene); grandchildren, Melissa, Ryan (Liz), Allison, Craig (Lindsay), Zack (Nichole), Brent, Aaron, Chelsea, Dustin, Alexis, Megan (Derrik), Sydney, Adam, Alex, Denver, Clint, Patrick, Blake, Mason, Chase and Britnei; great-grandchildren, Christian, Lexi, Abby, Addison, Jenna, Hailey, Cameron and Olivia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline; parents and his step-father, Joseph Simon.
Friends and family may visit from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S Wynn Rd., Oregon, where a veteran’s service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by a scripture service and family remembrances’. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at Epiphany of the Lord Parish at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider V.F.W. #4906 or Epiphany of the Lord Parish.
